SU: We had this idea that we would make the Spider Language website non-linear, as best we could. Using the spider web as the inspiration and the metaphor for the navigation, you are always led back to the centre, the heart, of the site which is populated by (unlabelled) graphics.
And from these you move out radially, and randomly. Nowadays this would not be considered the best user experience: people are much more savvy and experienced with websites and have expectations on how websites work. Initially Archer and I considered ‘rationalising’ the way the site moves, but you know…I like the step-step-step walking pace process you have to go through. It is slower than we high speed surfers expect, because there’s more stops on the journey. But this is a site for contemplation, and pausing, slowing down, that works…
